Why does summer see a lot of crashes?

On Behalf of | May 9, 2024 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

If you asked a driver when the most dangerous time of the year was, they’d probably answer winter due to the often hazardous conditions the weather can cause. However, most drivers are aware of these dangers and take measures to mitigate them.

For teenagers, summer is the most dangerous season. In particular the 100 days between Memorial Day and Labor Day – often termed the “100 deadliest days of summer”.

Here are some of the reasons why:

Drinking and driving

Summer means outdoor parties, barbecues, music festivals and public holidays. All these tend to involve an increased consumption of alcohol for a lot of people. They seem to forget just how dangerous driving after consuming alcohol can be, hence many crashes occur.

Summer vacation

Teen drivers will spend more time on the road during summer than the rest of the year as they are not sat at a school desk all week. They are free to go places, be that a short outing or a long road trip. The more miles you drive, the more likely it is you will crash.

The summer vibe

People often behave differently in summer. They take a more carefree attitude to life, turn up the music, hang their arms out the car window and more. While it is great to relax, driving well requires you to stay alert and if a driver is too relaxed, they may miss something and cause a crash.

Many of these factors apply just as much to adults as they do to teens. If another driver injures you, no matter what their age, you should find out more about how to claim compensation.
