Modern vehicles are larger than they were in previous years. Full-size pickup trucks today would dwarf their counterparts from decades in the past.
For instance, one man took a picture standing next to a new GMC vehicle. He is 6’1″ tall, but the top of the vehicle’s hood was right next to his shoulders. Essentially, the blunt front end of that vehicle is a 5-foot wall of metal and plastic, and this creates some significant dangers.
Children could be entirely hidden
For instance, a child standing in front of the same vehicle wouldn’t be visible to the driver. Even many high school or college students would be too short, but elementary students certainly are. This often leads to accidents when children are using crosswalks or walking through a parking lot, and the driver of one of these vehicles just can’t see them at all.
Cyclists may also face risks
Similarly, these oversized vehicles tend to have major blind spots that could hide a cyclist. A driver may think that it’s safe to turn right through the bike lane, simply not realizing that a cyclist is sitting next to their truck.
If that driver still turns and strikes the cyclist, it is their fault for making a negligent mistake. But it’s also understandable that the driver would feel like they didn’t mean to do anything wrong. They honestly had no idea that the cyclist—or the pedestrian—was there to begin with. The size and design of their vehicle is working against them and causing these serious accidents.
