Motorcycles offer a lot of fun, freedom and fuel efficiency, so it is no wonder they are so common on San Diego roadways. With spring on the horizon, motorcyclists should perform a seasonal safety inspection because no amount of protective gear can fully compensate for the fact that motorcyclists are less protected than car drivers.
San Diego’s spring weather is known for its heavy rainfall, which makes the roadways more slippery than normal. Travelers heading to the beach or Tijuana also cause an increase in traffic on the highways. Motorcyclists must be careful to avoid becoming involved in accidents caused by the increased number of vehicles on the road.
Prepping your motorcycle for spring riding
Be sure your bike is in good condition and free of damage before your first spring ride. The following checklist should help.
- Tires: San Diego’s rainy season happens in the spring. You need to make sure that your tires are in top condition to safely handle the slick roads. First, check the air pressure in your tires and add air if needed. Then, check your treads for wear and tear. If they look worn, replace them with “all-weather” tires before your first outing.
- Lights: Inspect them to ensure they are working properly.
- Battery: Check the battery terminals for corrosion. Then, use a multimeter to measure the voltage.
- Fluids: Check your brake fluid, oil and coolant levels. Top off or replace if they are low.
Check your motorcycle’s turn signals and horns to make sure that they are in functioning order before you hit the road. Also, make sure that your drive chain, triple clamps, brakes and suspension are all in good working order.
When you get on the road, follow traffic laws to ensure the safety of yourself and everyone you pass. If someone hits you or causes you to get into an accident, seek legal assistance with your case.
