It’s very important to know how to drive in adverse weather conditions, whether that means rain, snow or wind. One weather condition the drivers sometimes experience is simply encountering fog. This can suddenly reduce visibility to almost zero, so drivers need to know how to react safely.
Unfortunately, many drivers make mistakes. With that in mind, consider the following tips for how you should drive if you are in the fog.
Use your low beams
Do not use your high beams when you drive in the fog. They just make visibility worse as the light bounces off of the water particles. Instead, use fog lights or low beams. This gives you the maximum amount of visibility for those conditions.
Remain focused
Do not simply keep driving in the fog as if nothing has changed. Take the weather conditions seriously and remain focused on the road. Pedestrians, cyclists and even other vehicles could materialize very quickly ahead of your car, and you must be ready to react.
Consider stopping safely
The biggest mistake people make in the fog is significantly slowing down or stopping while they’re still on the road. This often leads to rear-end accidents because other drivers can’t see them. If the fog is so bad that you cannot continue driving, pull as far off of the road as you can or park in a parking lot until it clears.
Even if you follow these tips, another driver could injure you in an accident. That’s when you need to know how to seek financial compensation for medical bills, lost wages and more.
