Brain Injury Awareness Day – Recognizing Those With Invisible Injury

| Mar 18, 2015 | Firm News

March 18, 2015 is Brain Injury Awareness Day. The personal injury lawyers  at Martinez & Schill want to bring attention to the facts and statistics surrounding brain injuries in the United States in connection with Brain Injury Awareness Month.

The invisible signs of a brain injury, including: memory loss, concentration problems, insomnia, chronic pain, emotional and personality changes, depression, and anxiety, are sometimes more difficult to live with than visible disabilities.  For those suffering from a brain injury, it can be more difficult to feel their injures are understood than others with readily apparent injuries such as scars or broken bones.  A person with a brain injury may look and act completely normal to you, but may be dealing with invisible signs of brain injury.  We remind you to have compassion and patience in relationships with others who have a brain injury.  In representing clients with mild traumatic brain injuries and TBI’s we understand the lack of awareness in society relating to recognizing the significant impact a brain injury has on an individual and their loved ones.

We hope you take a few minutes to watch a video from Hope After Head Injury regarding one woman’s real-life experience of a brain injured person; to watch a video from the Washington Post about coming home a different person after a brain injury or to read the staggering statistics associated with brain injuries.

The Brain Injury Association of United States published a list of statistics relating to the prevalence of brain injuries:

  1. Every day, 137 people in the U.S. die because of a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) related injury.
  2. Every 13 seconds, someone in the U.S. sustains a TBI.
  3. At least 2.5 million children and adults sustain TBIs in the U.S. each year: 2.2 million are treated in emergency departments for TBI each year.
  4. 280,000 are hospitalized for TBI each year.
  5. 50,000 die because of TBI each year.
  6. At least 5.3 million Americans live with TBI-related disabilities.
