Anyone can be injured by a dog bite, but some studies show that children are most at risk. For instance, one report claims that the greatest risk is to children between the ages of one and five. It also noted that German Shepherds statistically caused the highest total number of injuries, while pit bulls inflicted the most serious injuries on their victims.
But why is it that children face this risk? There are many potential reasons, but below are two of the main ones to keep in mind.
Their small size
First and foremost, consider a child’s size and strength compared to a German Shepherd or a pit bull. Because children are smaller, they have less ability to fend the dog off or protect themselves from an attack. Additionally, children are more likely to suffer serious bites to the face, neck or throat simply because of their smaller stature. Adults who experience the same attack may be bitten on the legs or arms.
Interactions with dogs
The other thing to remember is that children do not always understand interactions with dogs or how to treat a potentially aggressive dog. Some children just assume that all dogs are friendly because they have a friendly pet dog at home, so they may run up to any dog they see to pet or hug it, which dogs can take as a sign of aggression. On top of that, children are less able to read a dog’s body language, such as noticing that the dog appears to feel frightened or stressed, which can often be the precursor to a bite.
Has your child been injured in a dog bite because of the owner’s negligence? If so, you may deserve substantial compensation.
