On Tuesday, September 16, a new law will take effect that will provide Southern California bicyclists with added safety on the roadways. The new law will require drivers to allow for at least 3 feet clearance when passing a bicyclist on the roadway. The new legislation is designed to help prevent Southern California and San Diego bicycle accidents. Drivers must also keep their distance before it is safe to pass. Motorists who are caught not allowing a safe 3 foot clearance when passing a cyclist on the road will face a fine between $35 and $200. If an accident is involved, the fine can increase up to $1,000.
According to the League of American Bicyclists, up to 40 percent of all fatal bike accidents are caused by unsafe passing. Those accidents usually take place when bicyclists get hit from behind. This new legislation will help to alleviate some accidents by requiring increased safety by motorists when passing a cyclist.
By far, the most common type of bicycle accident is an accident with a motor vehicle. This new legislation will help to protect bicyclists who are more vulnerable on the road. Careless and negligent motorists create a significant risk of injury or death to bicycle riders who do not have the same level of protection as a person riding in a car.
